The admission control algorithm described in Section 3 lends itself as basis for a distributed connection establishment protocol for real-time connections over wormhole networks.
The protocol consists of a set of host establishment controllers (HECs) running on the hosts connected to the network, and a set of local switch establishment controllers (SECs), one per switch. The SEC can reside in the switch controller itself (this solution is not possible in Myrinet switches,) or on a host (or the network interface controller of that host) connected to the switch, or even on a remote host (or its network interface controller).
The SEC of a switch maintains the blocking guards at that switch and other information about the currently established connections that traverse the switch, or connections that are in the process of being established.
