Fig. 10.1. Measuring newborn face preferences. A few minutes or
hours after birth, human infants are presented schematic stimuli,
measuring how far to the side their eyes or head track each
stimulus. The experimenter does not see the specific pattern shown,
and neither does the observer who measures the baby's responses. Face
preferences have been found even when the experimenter's face and all
other faces seen by the baby were covered by surgical masks. Reprinted
