You go to work for a company that develops "smart electronics" and are given the job of designing an interface for controlling home electronics from your computer. This includes heating and air conditioning, all major appliances, lighting, security, etc.

1. Describe the cognitive issues involved in this design task. How do users' attention, perception and recognition, memory, and mental models affect this design? (no more than 2 pages, single spaced)

2. Describe the social issues involved in this design task. What forms of coordination between users are required? What about awareness? (no more than 2 pages, single spaced)

3. Present your design with both diagrams and textual description. (no more than 4 pages including figures, single spaced)

4. Describe the conceptual model(s) and metaphor(s) chosen for your design. What model(s) of interaction did you decide on? What (if any) metaphor did you use in your design? (no more than 2 pages, single spaced)

Important: All reports are to be printed on a word processor or typed (no handwritten assignments will be accepted). It is expected that students will correct grammar and spelling--these are grounds to deduct from your grade. (i.e. Use a spelling checker and reread what you write before turning it in.)
