Resources for my Precept Inductive Bible studies
In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. (Revelation 1:16).
At first glance this might seem like an odd metaphor, but it’s not just any sword. It’s a Thracian javelin (shown above): a sword you can throw with great force. When the Romans encountered the Thracians armed with this sword, they had to redesign their helmets. Likewise, in line with the metaphor, every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God is powerful and will accomplish the purpose for which God sends it out. Considering the text in its historical and cultural context makes all the difference, and now the metaphor makes perfect sense. The 1st century AD readers of the book of Revelation would have known what a Thracian javelin was, but we need to dig a little deeper to uncover this truth. That’s what we do here -- dig deep to see what God wants to tell us.
Oh, and I also own that sword in the picture. Fearsome blade, but the Word of God is stronger yet (Hebrews 4:12).
Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4, Deuteronomy 8:3)
These words are faithful and true. (Revelation 22:6)
One of the class assignments in our study of Revelation was to draw the events as recorded by John as he saw them. I chose to use a schematic style, which lends itself well to the task since it doesn’t add anything to the text that is not already there. Above is my drawing for Revelation 8:8-9.
